tumultuous day in michigan as the state's governor signed bills making it the nation's 24th "right to work" state. cbs reporter randall pinkston was in lansing as tens of thousands of union supporters protested at the state capital. >> reporter: police clashed with union supporters who are angry over new legislation that makes michigan a "right to work" state. >> one of them grabbed me by the head and another sprayed me in the face. >> reporter: from the floor to the rafters inside the capital building, protestors shouted, shame on you, as michigan's republican-controlled house passed the bill. >> this is what democracy looks like! >> reporter: union members fear it will hurt wages and benefits and set a resident nationwide. >> cheap labor not even a living wage i'm sure. can you live on $10 an hour? >> reporter: the new law means public and private sector workers don't have to pay union dues, while getting union representation. backers say it creates more jobs and gives workers more freedom. >> it is the principle that people should not be forced to join a union or any organization if the

against those behind the just-passed right to work law in michigan state. thousands of protestors stormed the state capital today as lawmakers made their final vote on the plan. the law makes it illegal to force a worker to join a union or pay union dues. michigan is now the 24th state to did so. supporters say it will bring more jobs to the state but opponents including president obama are adamant the law is a political attack against unions. >>> in this economy people are struggling to find work but would you believe a bay area restaurant is struggling to find workers? cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in emeryville now. they have been holding job fairs. >> we're outside the construction site of that new restaurant also across the street from a job fair which started a few moments ago. as you can see by our little bear friend here. normally restaurant leaders of the black bear diner say they have lines around the block but as you can see, that isn't the case. >> we have very small turnout in comparison to our other job fairs. and we were a bit shocked. that's why we just were left

over michigan's right to work legislation carried into the night. earlier demonstrators were outside and inside the capitol as michigan's house passed the bill the senate approved earlier. protesters demand the governor veto the bill. >> i appreciate they have a different perspective. but this is the right thing for michigan. it gives workers choice. the workers freedom to choose. i view it as pro-worker. >> the new law means workers don't have to pay union dues while still getting union representation. >> thousands of san jose workers can circle a date on the calendar for what they'll be getting a raise. the city's new minimum wage will go up to $10. that's because of a measure that voters passed. they join only a handful of cities that have their own minimum wage. >> fresh dungeness crab is coming to a store near you. fish brokers wanted to drop the price saying high demand had led to low retail prices. they've agreed to $3 a pound. the local market should start receiving crab on friday. >>> still to come, a pair of secret santas surprise shoppers in the bay area. >> an odd choice
